San Jose Climbers Identity

Comprehensive identity system for a soon-to-be built indoor bouldering gym in downtown San Jose. Materials developed included logo, business papers, website, and samples of other potential applications. I sought to keep a personal non-corporate feel to the logo, as the gym will be coming into existence as a labor of love from the San Jose climbing community.

Road Dream Font

Font design inspired by beat writer Jack Kerouac, also included a promotional package with distressed tin, cigarette-burned t-shirt, infomrational poster and cd. Kerouac's writing style has a distinct combination of breathless flow, and bebop inspired cadence.

American Gods Movie Titles

Opening title sequence for an imagined film adaptation of the novel American Gods by Neil Gaiman. The storm and the coin illusion are both recurring metaphors in the story.

Brochure for Aquablue Spa

Brochure and list of services for a full service spa in Salinas, CA. This piece was particularly challenging due to the sheer quantity of information it contained.

Seasons Boutique Luncheon Invitation

A breezy and stylish invitation for a breezy and stylish event; the translucent pink envelopes were especially chic. I did not create the image of the seated woman for this piece; all other illustration is mine.

Altar Boyz Marquee Poster

Street Signage for San Jose Stage Company's production of Altar Boyz. This company produces a 5 show season, requiring a 7x9 postcard, tall rack card, show program, and marquee poster for each show. The typography is consistent from show to show, with new images created for each production.

Well Kneaded Business Card

I was very pleased with the image of the body inside the hands I developed for this certified massage therapist's business card.

The Beat Museum on Wheels Brochure

A tri-fold brochure for a touring lecture series about the Beat movement. I sought to show the independent thinking and free spirited nature of the Beats, plus the 'on the road' feel of traveling cross country in an airstream. The client loved it.

Elkhorn Farm & Mercantile

I generated a comprehensive identity package for this gourmet roadside boutique in Moss Landing, Ca. based on the tri-color artichoke concept provided by a friend of the client. The vibrant, sunny, and eclectic feel has been applied to business stationery, postcards, and display advertising. An online store and a billboard had been designed when the business had to close due to zoning regulations. Shown here is a full page ad that appeared in Food Guide magazine.

Monroe Insurance Brokerage Mark & Logotype

Updated logo for an Insurance Brokerage firm in Monterey using existing corporate colors.

Black Thunder Movie Poster

A friend's no-budget spin on 70's blacksploitation martial arts films. I also designed the production company's logo, and produced an art show and gala premiere to debut the film at Osio Cinemas in Monterey.

Esoteric Films Mark & Logotype

Logo for an independent film company based out of San Francisco. I was quite pleased with the minimal feel, and element of discovery in the stacked squares, and even more pleased that the producer/director liked it just as much.

Ol' Yeller Landscape Design Identity & Collateral

This high-end landscape design company in Texas wanted to update their logo to a more professional look, while incorporating the existing illustration of the dog referenced in the company's name. In addition to the identity package, I also created a postcard and doorhangers for this company.

Rafiq and Tunuviel Wedding Invitation

This offbeat couple were having an ecclectic Moroccan-themed wedding. They wanted something unusual that would be inexpensive to print, but were committed to add to the "wow" factor with handcrafted details. The pop-up was a nice solution; silver on black linen was very striking but low-cost, and the cut-out arch stole the show.

Ilan Funke-Bilu Attorney Website

Mr. Funke-Bilu is an accomplished criminal defense attorney in San Luis Obisbo. The relaxed idiosyncrasy of the site gives visitors a good introduction to his personal dynamic.

2010-11 Season Brochure

Brochure for San Jose Stage Company's 28th Season. They were seeking to revitalize their look for the year, introducing a more edgy contemporary feel without alienating their more conservative patrons.

Thanks for visiting my portfolio

In addition to earning my BFA in Graphic Design from San Jose State University in 2009, I also have over 10 years real-world design experience. I am accustomed to fast-paced environments where attention to detail and grace under pressure are de rigeur. I hope you enjoy viewing my work. Please email me if you would like to discuss your design needs.

what is this grid and squiggles stuff all about?

art:science :: logic:emotion :: hard:soft :: masculine:feminine :: love:fear :: yin:yang :: prickles::goo :: grid:squiggles

Design exists along a continuum of opposites. It is the place where duality finds harmony. It requires as much art as it does science, as much hubris as it does inertia. The grid is the careful reasoning necessary to give a design structure and strength, while the squiggles are the breaths of inspiration that rush in to bring it life.

Here is Alan Watts talking about prickles and goo.
